Some quotes from the interview of January 21, 2004 where ALEX B. ATUHAIRE talked to Uganda's ?Iron Lady' who represents Lira Municipality in parliament. How ready is UPC in the build-up to the 2006 transition? Well, UPC as you know has been at the forefront in challenging the National Resistance Movement dictatorship and oppressive nature of the regime. What I can only tell you is that we are happy in the sense that people are now realising that what we have been talking about is actually the truth. People are now coming up to identify themselves with our position. Members of the Movement who were actually very strong in the Movement are now coming up to support our position. That is an indication that our message has sunk. Now, the transition of 2006; if we said dictatorship is bad for the country, it was bad yesterday, it is bad today and will be bad tomorrow. We must fight anything that allows one-man dictatorship. When we were debating the draft 1995 constitution some people were extremely uncomfortable with the UPC attempt to join hands with other political groups in order to struggle for democracy. We were highly criticised even within the party. But I do not think now you need Mrs Ogwal to come and tell people that the opposition must work together if we are to succeed. After 18 years of dormancy we must check out the membership of our party. The second thing is we must renew the leadership. We must carry out elections right from the grassroots to national level so that we come up with fresh and vibrant leaders. Politics now is so dynamic and we need a dynamic group of people who are acceptable, who can appeal to the young generation, who have not been exposed to multiparty politics." Talk about the IEC Under the IEC party members have participated in various elections. Anything happening in the country, which involves the activities of the party at the grassroots, district at national level, it is Mrs Ogwal. I am in charge; I am in charge! One of the reasons why I am quiet at the moment is because I am overwhelmed, some of the things I used to talk about ten years ago, everybody is talking about now. I am overwhelmed, I am happy! I was lonely then, people were condemning me.
Those who were condemning me for forming an alliance with other political groups are now themselves doing the same. If they had listened to me ten years ago, we would have moved miles by now. What should the opposition focus on before 2006? Let these people not waste time talking. If they want to talk let a few people talk because that is part of diffusing pressure but let serious people go on the ground and start mobilising their people. That is what the Movement is doing; serious people are on the ground registering members. Will you be one of the presidential candidates? Look, I do not determine my candidature. I am not a mad woman. In leadership you do not determine your candidature, it is the people who have seen some leadership qualities in you and would say ?that is the person we want because of a, b c d? I cannot stand up tomorrow or dream at night that I can be president and stand up and say I want to be president. That is crazy. - monitor | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
